Let me show you what I consider to be the product of the decade: It's an amazing piece of work, isn't it? I mean it has revolutionized things so much that I now wonder how I managed before I got one of these.. It's small, good looking, and given it's usefulness, pretty cheap too. I adore the idea that such a small thing could pack quite a punch. I've been using it quite frequently these days. When I'm home there's hardly a moment when I'm far from it. ഒരേഴെട്ട് വര്‍ഷം മുമ്പുള്ള കഥയാണ്. ഞങ്ങള്‍ അന്ന് എഞ്ജിനിയറിങ്ങിന് പഠിക്കുയാണ്. ഒരു ഈമെയില്‍ വിലാസം ഉള്ളത് പുലിത്വത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷണമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന കാലം. ക്ലാസ്സിലെ ആണ്‍പിള്ളേരില്‍ ചിലര്‍ക്കൊക്കെ ഒരു മോഹം - ഒരു സിഡി റൈറ്റര്‍ മേടിക്കണം. തനതായ കോളേജ് സ്റ്റൈലില്‍ ക്ലാസ്സില്‍ 'സഹകരണ റൈറ്ററി'നായി പിരിവ് തുടങ്ങി. സിനിമയും പാട്ടും ഒക്കെ പകര്‍ത്താമെന്ന് വ്യാമോഹിപ്പിച്ച് ഏതാനും പെമ്പിള്ളേരെയും സംഘടിപ്പിച്ചു. പിരിഞ്ഞു കിട്ടിയ കാശുമായി ഞാനും ഒരു കൂട്ടുകാരനും കൂടി പേരുകേട്ട കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ കടയില്‍ പോയി "ചേട്ടാ ഒരു സിഡി റൈറ്റര്‍ വേണം" എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. "പാനാസോണിക് 8x റൈറ്റര്‍ 4300 രൂപായ്ക്ക് തരാം" എന്ന് മറുപടി. ഏതാണ്ടത്രക്കൊക്കെ കാശ് പിരിഞ്ഞുകിട്ടിയതുകൊണ്ട് അതുതന്നെയങ്ങു മേടിച്ചു. പെട്ടിയും പുസ്തകവും ഒന്നുമില്ലാതെ പൊതിഞ്ഞു കിട്ടിയ സാധനം (OEM version) ആദ്യമായി കമ്പൂട്ടറില്‍ കുത്തി സിഡി റൈറ്റിയപ്പോള്‍ എന്തൊരു പുളകമായിരുന്നു. മൊത്തം 13 പേരുടെ സഹകരണ ഉപകരണമായത് കൊണ്ട് 'ഇന്നു ഞാന്‍, നാളെ നീ' എന്ന മട്ടിലായിരുന്നു ഉപയോഗം. ഇന്നത്തേത് പോലെ USB-യും കോപ്പുമൊന്നുമല്ല. സാധനം ...

സിനിമ ഇറങ്ങി ഇത്രയും കാലമായതുകൊണ്ട് ഇതിനേക്കുറിച്ച് ഒന്നുമെഴുതണ്ട എന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോഴാ 'സ്റ്റാര്‍ സിംഗറില്‍' മനോജ് കെ. ജയനും പിന്നെ അവതാരകയും ഈ സിനിമയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഏതാണ്ടൊക്കെയോ നല്ലത് പറയുന്നു! ഇതൊക്കെ കേട്ടിട്ടാരെങ്കിലും ഈ സിനിമ കാണാന്‍ പോയാലോ എന്ന് പേടിച്ചിട്ട് 'എന്നാലാവുന്നത് ചെയ്യാം' എന്ന വിചാരത്തോടെയാണ് ഇതെഴുതുന്നത്. സിനിമയുടെ ക്വാളിറ്റിയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഏതാണ്ടൊരൈഡിയ കിട്ടിക്കാണുമല്ലോ.. വീണ (മീര ജാസ്മിന്‍) വലിയ പാട്ടുകാരിയാകാന്‍ കൊതിക്കുന്ന ഒരു 'പാവം' പെണ്‍കുട്ടി. അവളുടെ അച്ഛന്റേയും (ജഗതി ശ്രീകുമാര്‍), മരിച്ചു പോയ അമ്മയുടേയും, പിന്നെ ചെറിയച്ഛന്റേയും (ജഗദീഷ്) സ്വപ്നങ്ങളും അതുതന്നെയായതിനാല്‍ ഫാമിലി സപ്പോര്‍ട്ടിന് ഒരു പഞ്ഞവുമില്ല. പോരാത്തതിന് വൃദ്ധനെങ്കിലും പ്രശസ്തനായ ഒരു ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി സംഗീതജ്ഞന്റെ (നെടുമുടി വേണു) ശിഷ്യയുമാണ് വീണ. ഇതൊക്കെയായിട്ടും സിനിമയില്‍ പാടാനുള്ള അവളുടെ ആഗ്രഹം നീണ്ട കാലമായി നിറവേറാതെ കിടക്കുന്നു. ഈ സമയത്താണ് അമീര്‍ എന്ന സമ്പന്നനായ ചന്ദന ബിസിനസ്സുകാരന്‍/കള്ളക്കടത്തുകാരന്‍ (മനോജ് കെ ജയന്‍) ആകസ്മികമായി വീണയെ പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ...

We had planned to try this 'Government' restaurant at Pettah when it opened last May. It was only a couple of days after the inauguration and Kurian, our reliable scout, reported that they were severely understaffed and not able to keep the tables running. So we had moved on to some other diner that day. Anyway, I paid a visit to the 'Chicken Restaurant' a couple of days back for lunch. The restaurant is pretty decent in the inside, although the air conditioners were conveniently put off. The place looks real nice (especially for a Government concern) and the tables are comfortably spaced. The lunch menu, however, was not very exciting. Chicken Biriyani, Chapathi, Chicken Fry & chicken Curry! You don't need a menu card to tell you that, right? And they didn't have one either. Anyway, we ordered the Biriyani and chicken fry. We were developing an application on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 that, among other things, needed to use a PCI interface card for acquiring IRIG-B time codes. The Qt 4.5 based application was first developed without this capability, and later the device driver API was integrated to it. The API had a header file with a class declaration and a corresponding source file containing definitions of the class functions. Integrating the API involved adding these two files to the list of the project's source files and making calls to the API functions. This integration caused the application to abruptly crash after receiving SIGABRT signal. The reason reported was along the lines of: “ *** glibc detected *** application_name: malloc(): memory corruption: 0x092a51c8 *** ”. Being a memory error, we used Valgrind to locate any memory access violations. We found that the crash always happened at a single statement that dynamically allocated memory using operator new. The 2010 remake of the The Karate Kid (1984) has Jaden Smith in the title role and Jackie Chan as his teacher. The movie is produced by Will Smith , father of Jaden Smith. The movie is about an American kid who moves to China and has troubles with his school bullies. His opponents are experts in Kung Fu, being trained by a vicious 'no mercy' teacher. Our hero gets an unlikely teacher in Jackie Chan, who agrees to train him so that he can kick the bad guys' butt in a martial arts tournament. If the theme doesn't interest you much, the screen adaptation will bore you to death. Jaden Smith gives a terrible performance as an actor (compare it to Haley Joel Osment 's performance in The Sixth Sense ). The story is very familiar and has no hidden surprises. The movie doesn't do justice to it's title since the martial art that's portrayed is Kung Fu, rather than Karate. So, this really ought to be 'The Kung Fu Kid'.
